Dr. Jay Giedd of the NIMH has presented updates on our understanding of brain development.
He showed the myelination of the teenage brain and how late the superior temporal cortex matured.
In Giedd's recent paper, when the curves for females and males were superimposed, boys were more likely to have a "late blooming" profile.

This corresponds to data which show that boys have slower processing times.

Lost Childhood Creativity

Childhood Curiosity and Creative Inquiry

How does it end? why? is it our insistence on reality and the way things are?

Is it the schools we send them to where their innocent curiosity is dismissed as ignorance?

Is it the rote learning we emphasize in their early school years followed by the systematic removal of their unlimited imagination - what we adults call fantasy?

What happens to those developing brain circuits; those neuronal links that are changing and growing daily?

What is it that makes a child delve whole-heartedly into an investigation of how things work, and why everything is as it is?

For those who have experienced parenthood, you know the torrent of questions your child had, as he or she wandered around this exciting new world that they were discovering every moment of every day.

Whats that, dad?
Why, mom?
Hows it do that?

Then there are the hours of make believe, of limitless imagination, of that childhood joy; the joy of life itself.

So, how does it all come to an end?... and why?

Is it our insistence on so-called
reality
and
the way things are?
