Music and Whole Mind Success

The effect of music on the mind and emotions has been known for centuries.
We did not need Neuroscientists to confirm what many of us have already known or FELT - that music can uplift us, or, unfortunately, even do the opposite.

Today music is regularly used as therapy for patients with various neural disorders, such as Parkinson's disease.
Some of you may have seen or heard of the remarkable effects of music on some sufferers of the disease.
In one case, a patient who used to play the piano was now immobile and expressionless. However, when the doctor seated her at a piano and asked her to play a particular piece of music, the transformation was almost miraculous. Her hands began to move swiftly over the piano keys and her face softened with feeling and expression.
Her playing was also accomplished, just as it was before she contracted Parkinson’s.

Music has been used as part of our Whole Mind Success methods for over two decades - well before functional MRIs and other brain-imaging methods verified the efficacy of these techniques.
We at WMS have known for years, from direct experience, about the benefits of our methods - confirmed by the positive feedback we receive every year from our workshop participants.

Music & Memory II

The nature of Memory on a neuronal level is not as clear cut as the popular press leads us to believe.

With functional MRIs and other brain-imaging techniques, we discover that certain areas of the brain are used during short-term or long-term memory. Just as there is no "one" memory, there is no one area that 'deals' with memory.

In the case of music, our auditory memory involves listening, processing, storing and recalling sounds - in this case, music. Contrary to popular belief, it is not only the right hemisphere which is involved, but also the left. The temporal lobe also plays a major role in musical memory.

Listening to Mozart is pleasurable, but despite popular stories, there is no definitive proof of its benefits on memory. In fact, the one study responsible for the excitement was on college students who took the spatial recognition test and showed an improvement which lasted for less than 15 minutes. Attempts by other research institutions to repeat these findings have not been successful.

Memory and Music

Happy Holidays !

Musical memory is one of the strongest forms of conditioning we can have.

Most of us know how tunes we heard as young children still play away in our heads at the oddest of times.

Even today there are still times when I hear songs – especially hymns from my childhood days playing in my head.
I may even suddenly burst out with a hymn that relates to something that was said – much to the chagrin of those around me.
Of course many of us also know that just about any word in our language today has been used in some song or the other.

So, because musical associations are verbal, even hearing a word can trigger a song in our heads

To be cont.
